Emily Blunt & Lin-Manuel Miranda to Star in Mary Poppins Returns

Emily Blunt & Lin-Manuel Miranda to Star in Mary Poppins Returns

Emily Blunt & Lin-Manuel Miranda to star in Mary Poppins Returns

Walt Disney Pictures has officially announced that Golden Globe Award winner Emily Blunt (Into the Woods, the upcoming Girl on the Train) and Emmy, Grammy, Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “In the Heights”) are set to star in Mary Poppins Returns, a sequel to the studio’s 1964 classic, Mary Poppins, which will be released on December 25, 2018.
Reuniting the director and producing team behind Disney’s hit film musical Into the Woods, the film will be directed by Oscar nominee, Emmy and DGA Award winner Rob Marshall and produced by Marshall, Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee John DeLuca and Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Marc Platt. The screenplay will be written by Oscar nominee David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers, with Oscar nominee and Tony Award winner Marc Shaiman composing an all-new score and Shaiman and Emmy nominee and Tony Award winner Scott Wittman writing original songs.
Blunt has been cast as Mary Poppins and Miranda will play a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack. Drawing from the wealth of material in P.L. Travers’ seven additional novels, the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,” says Marshall.
P.L. Travers introduced the world to the no-nonsense nanny in her 1934 book “Mary Poppins,” which Disney adapted for the screen and released in August, 1964. The film, which was directed by Robert Stevenson and starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, won five Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Andrews. However, the subsequent adventures of Mary Poppins remained only on the pages of P.L. Travers’ seven additional books, which she published between 1935 and 1988.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight

Beam up to our guide to the most memorable Chris Pine movies before Star Trek Beyond hits theaters.

Prepare for Star Trek Beyond with our guide to the most memorable Chris Pine movies

The Star Trek franchise has gone beyond colons in Star Trek Beyond, the next chapter in the reboot films. For the third time, Chris Pine will appear as the young Captain James T. Kirk alongside with the rest of the new Star Trek cast. And while Pine’s first two Star Trek films did well, it’s still an open question about whether Pine is a box office draw by himself.
Make no mistake, Pine has done quite well during his 13 years as a professional actor. But he’s also come up short as the latest actor to reboot Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Outside of Star Trek, Pine has yet to find a signature hit. His next potential blockbuster, Wonder Woman, has him in a supporting role as Steve Trevor, the long-time love interest of the title character.
Ahead of Star Trek Beyond’s release on July 22, ComingSoon.net has put together a retrospective of Pine’s films to date with a spotlight on the most memorable projects. Share your own favorite Chris Pine movies in the comment section below!

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)

image: http://cdn3-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/PD2.jpg
The Princess Diaries 2 is among the earliest Chris Pine movies.
It’s kind of appropriate that Pine’s career is currently book ended by his appearances as the love interest for Wonder Woman and the love interest for the future Catwoman. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement was Pine’s first feature length film, and he played Lord Nicholas Devereaux, an unlikely suitor for the heart of Anne Hathaway’s Princess Mia.
The Princess Diaries 2 is a very Disney movie, and most of the focus was on Hathaway’s character. But Pine turned enough heads in the role that it ultimately led to chances to appear as the lead in his next few films.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: Smokin’ Aces (2006)

image: http://cdn3-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/smoking.jpg
Smokin' Aces is another of the most popular Chris Pine movies.
After headlining two low-budget romantic comedies, Pine got his first taste of the action genre in Smokin’ Aces as Darwin, one of a trio of Neo-Nazi brothers including Kevin Durand and Maury Sterling who were sent to kill Jeremy Piven’s Buddy “Aces” Israel before he could cut a deal with the Feds.
Pine’s role in this film is relatively small, since the gimmick of Smokin’ Aces was the multiple assassins as played by Alicia Keys, Taraji P. Henson, Tommy Flanagan, and Nestor Carbonell. Ryan Reynolds played Richard Messner, the FBI agent assigned to protect Israel. The film was a modest hit at the box office.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: Star Trek (2009)

image: http://cdn1-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/kirkspock.jpg
J.J. Abrams first Star Trek certainly deserves a spot among the best Chris Pine movies.
Not all classic Star Trek fans are that fond of the reboot films directed by J.J. Abrams, but the state of the franchise in 2009 tends to be overlooked. There hadn’t been a Star Trek film since 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis or a TV show since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005. The series needed fresh blood, and that’s what it got in this film.
Pine took over the role of Captain Kirk from William Shatner, and headlined the Star Trek reboot alongside Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, both of whom appeared as Spock. The reboot was a smash success, but some complained that it veered away from the sci-fi aspects of Star Trek and became more of an action film.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: Unstoppable (2010)

image: http://cdn1-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/123.jpg
Unstoppable is another entry in the Chris Pine movies canon.
Unstoppable is the case study of why Pine hasn’t fully arrived yet. In 2010, Pine was paired with Denzel Washington and Rosario Dawson in a Tony Scott-directed film that got pretty good reviews…and yet Unstoppable tapped out at around $81 million domestically. That’s a modest hit, or at least it would be if the production budget hadn’t been closer to $100 million. Then a modest hit becomes a flop.
The unfortunate part is that Unstoppable is actually pretty good. Pine played Will Colson, a conductor who teamed up with Washington’s Frank Barnes to stop a runaway train.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: This Means War (2012)

image: http://cdn2-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/thismeans.jpg
This Means War is another of the Chris Pine movies on this list.
Want to talk flops? Welcome to This Means War. For this movie, Pine portrayed CIA agent Franklin “FDR” Foster, a man who found himself in a rivalry with his friend and fellow agent Tuck Hansen (Tom Hardy) for the heart of Reese Witherspoon’s Lauren Scott. Essentially, it was a romantic comedy action film… that nobody wanted.
$54 million would be considered a respectable return at the box office, if the film hadn’t cost at least $65 million to make. But the unmistakable impression is that the public had little interest in seeing Chris Pine as the next big action star.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

image: http://cdn3-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/intodarkness.jpg
Star Trek Into Darkness is certainly another of the best known Chris Pine movies.
Star Trek Into Darkness eroded a lot of the good will for the Star Trek reboot by shamelessly remixing and mashing up the events of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. That included giving Pine’s Captain Kirk the epic “death” that belonged to Spock in the first telling of the story. Although it was unintentionally hilarious when Quinto’s Spock screamed “Khaaaan!” And wasn’t it weird that Kirk didn’t have any major radiation burns in that scene?
This movie was not a financial failure by any means, but the critical and fan response was lukewarm compared to the first reboot.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)

image: http://cdn2-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/Shadow.jpg
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is another on the list of Chris Pine movies.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit was the second attempt to reboot the Jack Ryan feature film franchise, with Pine taking over the title role that was previously held by Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford, and Alec Baldwin. And it was yet another Chris Pine action film to bring in less than its production budget.
It’s unfair to completely pin this movie’s failings on Pine. But as the leading man, he certainly deserves his share of the blame. It’s a very average film and audiences did not respond to it.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: Horrible Bosses 2 (2014)

image: http://cdn1-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/HB2.jpg
Horrible Bosses 2 is another of the more recent Chris Pine movies.
Horrible Bosses 2 had a different part for Pine. Rather than casting Pine as the hero, he played Rex Hanson, the somewhat sympathetic antagonist of the film. However, audiences treated it with the indifference of a regular Chris Pine action film and it managed just over $54 million domestically, which is less than half what the first Horrible Bosses movie made.
Perhaps the real lesson here is that not every comedy deserves to get a sequel.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: Z for Zachariah (2015)

image: http://cdn1-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/zfor.jpg
Z For Zachariah is another of the more recent Chris Pine movies.
You’d think that a movie with Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Chris Pine as the only primary performers would get a lot of attention. And yet Z for Zachariah came and went at the box office with little response at all. The film was an adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s novel, with Pine’s Caleb added to the story as a catalyst for romantic tension between Robbie’s Ann and Ejiofor’s John Loomis.
Z for Zachariah didn’t flinch from going dark, even if it wasn’t quite a faithful adaptation. But it only received a limited release in this country.

Chris Pine Movies Spotlight: The Finest Hours (2016)

image: http://cdn3-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/2016/05/finest.jpg
The Finest Hours is among the most recent Chris Pine movies.
Pine’s most recent film, The Finest Hours came out earlier this year to a colossal thud at the box office. The story was based on the real Coast Guard rescue of the SS Pendleton in 1952, with Pine as Bernard “Bernie” Webber, one of the leading figures in that incident. As historical disaster thrillers go, it’s not bad. But the audience simply wasn’t there for this picture, leaving another disappointing mark on Pine’s record.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows Interviews

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows Interviews

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows interviews

T-U-R-T-L-E power is back this Friday when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, the sequel to the 2014 reboot of the TMNT film franchise, hits theaters. The likeably unlikely team of crime-fighting mutants returns — with friends both old and new — to battle some familiar faces and encounter newer, intergalactic threats.
We sat down to talk all things “Turtles” with Out of the Shadows director Dave Green (Earth to Echo) and stars Stephen Amell (Casey Jones), WIll Arnett (Vern Fenwick), Stephen Farrelly (Rocksteady), Tyler Perry (Baxter Stockman), and Gary Anthony Williams (Bebop). You can catch a super-cut of our interviews in the player below.
While all remembered the Turtles fondly, it was Green, Perry and Farrelly in particular who named themselves personal fans of the comic books and cartoons that started it all.
We asked Stephen Amell how he took on the role of hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones, who fights crime as a member of a team rather than its leader (as he does on his CW series Arrow), while Will Arnett talked about exploring his character Vern Fenwick’s discomfort with his new role as New York City’s savior.
Though there are a few similarities to the 1992 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the OozeParamount Pictures’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows breaks new ground in featuring Baxter Stockman’s first cinematic turn as a major character, and the live-action film debut of cartoon favorites Bebop and Rocksteady.
Perry confessed his portrayal of Stockman was inspired by a real-life science hero, while Williams and Farrelly joked about how far they’d go to understand the animal counterparts to their on-screen characters Bebop and Rocksteady.
Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael again take on their lethal nemesis Shredder (Brian Tee) after he escapes police custody and joins forces with an even bigger villain: the warlord from another dimension, Krang (voiced by Brad Garrett). They’ll need the help of April O’Neil (Megan Fox), Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), and newcomer Casey Jones (Stephen Amell) to face off against Shredder, who drafts scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) and henchmen Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen Farrelly) to help him and Krang defeat the Turtles and take over the world.
You can check out the dimension-spanning, martial arts mutant mayhem when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opens nationwide on June 3.

First look at Hugh Jackman on the Wolverine 3 set

20th Century Fox has officially started filming Wolverine 3 in New Orleans and Just Jared has posted the first photos from the set. You can view the photos by clicking here! Let us know your thoughts about the photos in the comments below.
The cast for the film includes Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier. They’re joined by Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez.
We’ve heard that the primary antagonists of the film are none other than Wolverine’s favorite group, Weapon X. How they factor into the movie along with The Reavers remains to be seen, but it’s certainly possible that they’re working together in an effort to stop or capture Wolverine as well as the young clone of him, X-23, who will also be along for the film’s road trip.
James Mangold directs from a script by David James Kelly. Producer Simon Kinberg previously confirmed that Wolverine 3 will be rated R. Mangold’s previous film, The Wolverine, saw an alternate R-rated cut released on home media after its theatrical release.

Jesse Eisenberg Thinks He’s Coming Back for Justice League

Jesse Eisenberg Thinks He's Coming Back as Lex Luthor for Justice League

Jesse Eisenberg thinks he’s coming back for Justice League

Production is already underway for Warner Bros.‘ upcoming Justice League Part One and the cast has continued to grow as cameras roll. One character, however, that we don’t know for sure about is Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, who had some cryptic words at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that appeared to set up the 2017 film.
Speaking on a panel at MCM Comic Con in London, Eisenberg was asked if he’s returning for the film, but he’s not even sure himself.
“They just started filming Justice League so I’m kind of waiting for my crack at it… I think so, and I love it and I love everybody, it’s a really talented group of people obviously, so I certainly hope to be in it.”
One character we know will return is Jeremy Irons’ Alfred Pennyworth. The actor spoke with Event magazine about the reaction to Batman v Superman and promised that the next film will be “simpler.”
“Deservedly so,” Irons said about the mixed reaction to the film. “I mean it took £800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter, but it was sort of overstuffed… It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it’s more linear.”
Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot will be reprising their roles as the DC Trinity, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in Justice League, and joining them are Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Amber Heard is set to play Queen Mera in the film as well before moving to the solo Aquaman movie in 2018, with Willem Dafoe appearing in a mystery role, and J.K. Simmons playing Commissioner Gordon.
Justice League will debut in theaters on November 10, 2017.

Release Dates for Alita: Battle Angel, Predator and Fox/Marvel Films

Release Dates for Alita: Battle Angel, Predator and Fox/Marvel Films.

Release dates for Alita: Battle Angel, Predator and Fox/Marvel films

Following the news that Maze Runner: The Death Cure had been pushed back almost 11 months to January 12, 2018, 20th Century Fox has revealed more release dates for some of their anticipated titles.
The big screen adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel, starring Maze Runner‘s Rosa Salazar, is coming to theaters on July 20, 2018. To be directed by Robert Rodriguez, the film will be produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau. Set in the 26th century, Alita: Battle Angel tells the story of Alita, an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. Within the context of an epic action-adventure, the film will explore a young woman’s journey of self-discovery and finding love.
Earlier that year, the Shane Black-directed The Predator will now hit theaters on February 9. It was previously scheduled for a March 2, 2018 release. Also scheduled for February 9, 2018 is Universal’s Fifty Shades Freed, which is the final installment of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy.
20th Century Fox has moved around two of its upcoming films featuring Marvel characters. The untitled film that was scheduled for January 12, 2018 will now open on March 2, 2018 (going up against MEG), while the film that was going to open on July 13, 2018 will now open on June 29, 2018. DreamWorks Pictures’ How to Train Your Dragon 3 is also sitting on that date. What do you think the two Fox/Marvel movies will be about? Give us your guesses in the comments below.
You’ll now be able to hop aboard the Kenneth Branagh-directed Murder on the Orient Express on November 22, 2017, a slight delay from the film’s previous date of November 10, 2017. On that date, you’ll instead get the Francis Lawrence-directed Red Sparrow. The studio has also moved up Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness from March 24, 2017 to February 17, 2017.
And looking at later this year, Fox has set a September 2 release date for Morgan, an October 21 release for Keeping Up with the Joneses, and a November 11 release for the Warren Beatty-directed Rules Don’t Apply.

The first cosplay photos from MomoCon 2016

ComingSoon.net is attending MomoCon this weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, and it’s one of the fastest-growing, all-ages conventions in the country. Attendees of the event have come together to share their love for Japanese anime, American animation, video games, comic books, and many of them brought some very creative cosplay. You can check out the cosplay photos in the gallery below!
The name MomoCon comes from the Japanese word for “Peach,” and with Georgia being “The Peach State” it makes for a perfect fit. MomoCon began as a fan-run event at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2005 and was even held at the Student Center & Commons in its first years. Since then, MomoCon has expanded to greater numbers of attendance and has had to change locations to meet the demand of those wishing to attend.
Some of the notable attendees of this year’s MomoCon include Producer/Writer/Artist Tad Stones who co-founded Walt Disney TV Animation and created “Chip ’n’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers” and “Darkwing Duck,” video game voice actor Nolan North, whose credits include Nathan Drake inUncharted, Desmond Miles in Assassin’s Creed, and most recently Ghost in Destiny; and many other comic book, video game, anime and online personalities!
Which one of the cosplay photos is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
